Background

The Greater Orleans Economic Development Council (GOEDC) has been created to foster greater economic development and growth in Orleans and surrounding area. The goal is to make the Greater Orleans area one of the best places in Canada to live and to start, conduct and grow a business.

GOEDC is a not for profit organization created by a group of dedicated local business people to address the loss of several thousand jobs in the area. Two of the largest employers of Greater Orleans residents are both moving to the west end of the city. Over the next 3-5 years the Department of National Defence (DND) and the RCMP will be moving their offices and thousands of people will be faced with the prospect of either moving to the west end, looking for alternative employment or engaging in extended commutes to work. Orleans is also an area with a large portion of the workforce employed by the Federal Government which has also begun a 3 year plan to reduce jobs. These job losses cannot be viewed as minor changes to the local economy!

GOEDC will be working collaboratively with the all three levels of government with the objectives of improving all transportation networks, protecting commercial lands, retention of existing local business, expanding local business and attracting new business to the area. It is important that the Greater Orleans area dramatically improves its jobs to household ratio and takes aggressive steps to become a stronger and more sustainable community.
